We finally have our last calf on the ground that was born yesterday afternoon! We were beginning to wonder! Abigail is our current eldest cow and maybe something had happened early on in her pregnancy this year or it might just be taking longer for her to cycle back for breeding than she used too...
We are finally attempting rotational grazing! We have been wanting to do it for so long and have only played around with it some in the past few years. This year we are going at it full bore! What is Rotational Grazing? What is rotational grazing? It is also called management intensive grazing (MIG) and there are all sorts of different levels that people attempt, but it mainly involves giving the cattle a portion of the field to sustain them for 1-3 days. Ideally you are giving them just enough for 1 day but in reality some people feel unable to take the time to move them each day and may give them 2-3 days or even a weeks worth. The best benefits reside in the 1 day range! The Benefit to the PastureHere we go! It is finally happening!
My brother, Andy, encouraged me a few years back that we really should be blogging our adventures as we attempt to learn to farm and raise livestock. It probably was after one of my many stories of something that actually worked or more likely a story about something that went quite awry and the lesson that I hopefully have learned. The latter especially happened more than the former in the first few years. Now, maybe they are just about equal. |
